Welcome to the Litterati community! With our app, you will be joining thousands of people from across the world as we make a difference, one litter at a time. Here are some tips to get you started.

How the Litterati App works:

  1. Join a challenge, or as many as you'd like.

  2. Photograph a piece of litter as you collect it.

  3. Discard all your litter properly when you're done.

  4. Upload and Tag your photos.

Join a Challenge

To help contribute your data, you first need to join a challenge. You can join a Featured or a Local challenge from the Challenges tab in the app.

If you were given a code before downloading the app, you can join with that code from the first time signing into the app. If you're already a user of Litterati, you can use that join code on the Challenge page.

You can join as many challenges as you want! The more challenges you join, the more data you'll share with those challenge creators. Your data won't be duplicated in the system, it's just going to be shared with more creators.

Photograph your litter

As you go about collecting Litter, you'll use the built-in camera to take photos as you go about. Ideally, you should be within 1 - 3 feet and take a clear, well-lit photo of the item. You can also snap a photo holding the item with your hand or a litter grabber.

Be sure to safely collect your items as you're taking photos using a bag, or bucket.

Discard all your litter properly when you're done

Be sure to sort out recyclables and follow all local laws regarding disposing of the items you've found. You might have to bring them home to dispose of them properly, so please consider this before going out.

Upload and Tag your photos.

When you've returned from your session, be sure to upload your photos via WiFi so they count towards your challenge(s). Be sure to also tag them in the app with what Object, Material, and Brand they are so they can be labeled within our database. If you're unsure, it's ok to leave it blank.

That's all! The goal is to make this process a habit and to do a quick clean-up as often as you can.

Use LitterData to inspire change.

It's very important for us to gather data for what, where, and when litter is collected. Why? Because the data is used to create a lasting impact on governments, companies, and other organizations.

Litterati members all over the world have been able to use LitterData to create positive environmental policy changes. You can too! Read our stories of impact here.
